Aurora movie theater shooting trial day 20: Videotaped interviews with gunman to be played in court

Day 20 in the Aurora movie theater shooting trial – People vs. James Eagan Holmes. Today, prosecutors plan to question state-appointed psychiatrist Dr. William Reid to the stand and play videotaped interviews between the doctor and the gunman. During the course of the trial, prosecutors will argue that Holmes, the admitted gunman, was sane when he went into the midnight premiere of the Dark Knight Rises in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater and opened fire on the audience, killing 12 and wounding 70. @penguin oh I get that part for sure. I would think though that some mental health professional be evaluating him the minute he was taken into custody to see state of mind. The notebook certainly demonstrates a confused mind, but not one that doesn't understand what he is doing or that it is wrong.

@syd That as well. i was trying to get my thoughts down and answer quickly before I lost my train of thought. In a case like this, there's no time to build a relationship w/ a patient as you do in individual therapy. he had to have as much info as possible for the limited amount of time the doctor had w/ him. If you don't know as much about your patient as possible, you won't know what to ask. By doing his homework, he has a good foundation to build upon.

@NT8 if the defendant had any long standing psychological issues, they would have continued.temporary insanity is another issue that I imagine would covered under different section of testimony i.e. the opinion of the defense's appointed psychological exam, which was already covered by Dr Reid when he said the defense examiners did **not** find the defendant not insane as defined by the state of Co.

@niki the thing with that is we have to go off of memory, as they did not video tape it. i think that video is extremely valuable in this case.
and @penguins, i know exactly what you mean! it's hard when you have such deep feelings or thoughts about something to get exactly what you want to say out.

I don't think the fact that he has been diagnosed with a hideous brain disease (schizophrenia) has been argued. I read somewhere that the disease is prevalent in his family. I wonder why he wasn't medicated prior to coming to Colorado. There are so many different type and degrees that they have to determine whether he was so affected by it that he lost culpability. I haven't seen anything yet that he did lose reality and thus right/wrong.

@wp No. During breaks and lunch, there is a holding cell in the courthouse that JH is taken to and served lunch. People would have to be wanded and go through security every time someone outside of law enforcement has contact w/ him.
