Aurora movie theater shooting trial day 20: Videotaped interviews with gunman to be played in court

Day 20 in the Aurora movie theater shooting trial – People vs. James Eagan Holmes. Today, prosecutors plan to question state-appointed psychiatrist Dr. William Reid to the stand and play videotaped interviews between the doctor and the gunman. During the course of the trial, prosecutors will argue that Holmes, the admitted gunman, was sane when he went into the midnight premiere of the Dark Knight Rises in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater and opened fire on the audience, killing 12 and wounding 70. Also remember that Reid's evaluation was almost 2 years after the shooting. Metzner's was done the year previously.

@AntiquatedEyes - Mental illness does not necessarily equate to insanity. They are separate. I am mentally ill, myself. I would know today if I decided to harm someone that it is wrong. I am not "insane."

@Tammy and Robin - I don't know that that is true. He might know now but from what I've read about delusions in schizophrenia that they still believe them even after they are proven to be not true. I think we have to hear it all and even then might not know, but he certainly does sound sane

So his parents never lived in Colorado? I had seen a lot of blaming the parents, in online comments, for not seeing his "insanity". Can any blame be placed on them if they weren't living with him?

A Paranoid Schizophrenic can know that something is wrong. It's their reasoning that is skewed by their illness. Their emotions are affected too.

@Rheba - no they live in San Diego I think. But I heard they knew he had schizophrenia as his aunt has it and some other relatives...so I would think they would have been more involved in getting him medicated

@rheba his family has a history of mental illness. his mom has released a book since all this and said that she knew something was wrong since he was three i think? i don't really think 'blame' can be placed, but i think that people probably wonder why, if she knew something was wrong and knew about the mental health problems in her family history, she didn't do something.

Dan King stated Schizophrenia in the Defence opening statements. JH has been placed on the Schizophrenic Disorder Spectrum by at least 20 doctors according to the Defence.

@AntiquatedEyes - Insane means knowing right from wrong here. If he knew right from wrong, he was not insane by legal definitions. He is absolutely mentally ill, and was unable to get satisfactory treatment. That is terribly sad and on some level I feel sorry for him. But he is guilty and not legally insane.

@Valm - Schizophrenia does not refer to multiple personality disorder. That falls under "dissociative identity disorder."

Not that this is validating anything, but my ex boyfriends sister was a paranoid schizophrenic and she was telling me one day that she tried killing her cat. That she choked it but then started to cry and realized that it was the wrong thing to do. People with schizophrenia don't have multiple personalities...

Schizophrenia is not a split personality! That is Dissosociative Disorder! Schizophrenia's symptoms include hallucinations and false fixed beliefs.

My brother is Bipolar and was diagnosed in his 20s which was 40 years ago. I've asked him if he knew right from wrong when he was manic and he said he did. He just did it anyway because it made him feel good.

insanity is a mental illness but that does not mean that mental illnesses are insanity. He can have a mental illness and also be sane. Let's not confuse that.

The problem with disorders such as Schizophrenia is that the person's own reality in their head can take over so much that even though they know something to be wrong they can't stop themselves from doing it. Or they believe that there is some other 'greater good' or 'greater reason' why they must do something.

I think it is impossible for any of us to say he is sane or insane - because I have to think, if we can, it should have been a breeze for the experts and they are all at odds
