Aurora movie theater shooting trial day 53: Phase 1 of sentencing hearing begins

Day 53 in the Aurora movie theater shooting trial – People vs. James Eagan Holmes. Today, the jury returns to the court room for phase one of the sentencing hearing, during which they will hear arguments from the prosecution and defense. The jury must then deliberate and come to a unanimous decision to move forward. If they do not, the gunman will be automatically be sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole. The jury found Holmes, the admitted gunman, was sane when he went into the midnight premiere of the Dark Knight Rises in an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater and opened fire on the audience, killing 12 and wounding 70.
