NOTE: THE "SCHEDULED" START TIME OF THIS CHAT IS SIMPLY A PLACEHOLDER. THERE IS NO INDICATION OF WHEN THE JURY WILL REACH A VERDICT, UNTIL THE COURT ANNOUNCES IT IS DONE. Jurors in the Aurora movie theater shooting trial will alert the court after they reach a verdict in each of the 165 counts in the trial of the People v. James Holmes. Holmes is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 70 others in a mass shooting inside an Aurora movie theater on July 20, 2012. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. I missed the beginning of the verdict; was there an audible reaction and what did Brauchler do?
by Poppy7/16/2015 10:52:55 PM
All of this is explained in detail in the jury instructions. 1st degree is after deliberation, with intent and to cause the death of a person other than himself. 2nd degree is just knowingly, no intent etc
by ERICA7/16/2015 10:53:37 PM
What else did u think the guy would get ?
by James Drouillard7/16/2015 10:53:39 PM
@charles lizotte Oh, people understand reasonable doubt just fine, there just wasn't any here.
by imnotreallyhere7/16/2015 10:53:40 PM
This is probably not going to go over well with this group but I have watched every day. I do not believe that our justice system works at all and in this case the PT had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that JH was sane at the time of the shooting and in my opinion they did not do that. It would have been a hung jury if I was there. JH needs mental help that he will never receive locked up.
by Stacie7/16/2015 10:53:42 PM
I missed the very first guilty......did JH react at all ? How about Brauchler?
by nic7/16/2015 10:53:43 PM
Thanks Ch 7, terrific coverage throughout. These families deserved these guilty verdicts, and I wish them the very best. Way to go jury, way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Madison7/16/2015 10:53:44 PM
So yes because they were in theater 8, no one in that theater were in his plans. But still should have been 1st degree on ALL
by ERICA7/16/2015 10:53:48 PM
As long as this is taking...there should have been 400 attempted murder charges.....
by Tired7/16/2015 10:53:49 PM
poor king is having a hard time standing there for so dang long
by Tara7/16/2015 10:53:52 PM
Hoping the defense doesn't poll the jury on each count.
by hoddy7/16/2015 10:53:53 PM
Glad there's perhaps a tiny degree of closure for victims' families who won't have to still be wondering about 1st phase of verdict on the third anniversary of shooting (20th)...a miniscule sigh of relief for them, I hope...
by fascinated 7/16/2015 10:53:56 PM
There was no audible or physical reaction to the verdict from anyone
by Laura Lou7/16/2015 10:53:57 PM
I disagree. I dont think the jury understands reasonable doubt.
by charles lizotte7/16/2015 10:53:58 PM
@nic You can scroll back thru the video and watch from the reading of the first verdict
by Just Thinkin7/16/2015 11:00:15 PM
Mr. King almost looks like a broken man. I feel bad for him at the moment.
by Sherrie H.7/16/2015 11:00:16 PM
@Danny---Holmes might find that he cares a little more about his fate when he goes off to prison, whether awaiting the DP or LWOP....life in the state prison system will be much less pleasant than he has been used to for the past 3 years...
by flip7/16/2015 11:00:17 PM
so what y'alls thoughts on death penalty?
by peace19787/16/2015 11:00:18 PM
What is polling the jury, and why would DT do it? (my law education conyinues thtrough you guys. lol)
by DocJ7/16/2015 11:00:19 PM
change your pinned photo to the victims not the shooter
by peace19787/16/2015 11:00:22 PM
@Charles An Attorney was on the deliberating Jury, they understood reasonable doubt.
by Abrandt7/16/2015 11:00:25 PM
Bend the knees King.....dont pass out from standing so long....
by Tired7/16/2015 11:00:27 PM
charles lizotte What part do you think they didn't understand?
by NT87/16/2015 11:00:28 PM
Death-certified juries, like this one, tend not to have reasonable doubts. That's one of the many, many problems with the Death Penalty in the USA.
by Frank7/16/2015 11:00:29 PM
@charles lizotte.....oh, I disagree. I think the jury understood the "reasonable doubt" concept very, very well.
by flip7/16/2015 11:00:30 PM
Ok im headed to the theatre now :)
by Tara7/16/2015 11:00:31 PM
If I was AC right now...I'd have my feet up on the table.
by Tired7/16/2015 11:00:34 PM
#NoNoterity
by peace19787/16/2015 11:00:35 PM
Just get to the bottom line already! Hoping he gets life over death; really...he's mentally ill.
by Vivre sa Vie X7/16/2015 11:00:36 PM
Apparently Charlie disagrees with 12 Jurors...
by Dennie Carp7/16/2015 11:00:37 PM
@charles lizotte...Are you serious?
by Robin7/16/2015 11:00:40 PM
There has been no reaction from the Defense since Judge Samour started reading the verdicts.
by Victoria7/16/2015 11:00:41 PM
@charles lizotte not only does this jury understand reasonable doubt but they were able to discern the differences between theater 9 victims and theater 8 victims...sorry it didn't go your way
by PA Watcher7/16/2015 11:00:42 PM
You think he is insane? He planned it, therefore not insane
by Kate7/16/2015 11:00:44 PM
ok he is guilty fry him no appeals he is done
by ok he is guilty fry him no...7/16/2015 11:00:45 PM
Sorry for all the sore losers, that wanted jh to walk.
by NT87/16/2015 11:00:46 PM
I hope the defense team polls the jury, but only if Higgs gets to do it.
by flip7/16/2015 11:00:47 PM
Talk about getting hte book thrown at you...JH got the entire library!
by Tired7/16/2015 11:00:47 PM
Dr Gur was NOT credible for this case. She's an academic. The other 2 defense drs were crap too.
by George7/16/2015 11:00:48 PM
The jury got it right. He is mentally ill (as are many killers), but he's not legally insane. Pre- planning, circling the date on a calendar is not a psychotic break on the night of the shootings.
by LoriJ7/16/2015 11:00:50 PM
Charles, I think they understood very well
by Happy7/16/2015 11:00:50 PM
What a horrible tragedy.... Thank you to all for finding this uncaring-no good "man" guilty! He deserves the death penalty.
by LaceeJ7/16/2015 11:00:51 PM
Guilty
by Denver77/16/2015 11:02:37 PM
Everyone thinks that just because someone uses insanity as a defense theyre lying this crime is horrible but dont you think its possible from all the evidence and all the testimony that he may have been insane at the time that right their is reasonable doubt im sorry
by charles lizotte7/16/2015 11:02:41 PM
Polling is asking each juror if this is their true verdict on each count.
