@Jim Justice: Only the Lord has the ability to render "final judgement". He gave us brains for a reason, and salvation to save us from ourselves. If we left all things only to God, then we would not have vaccinations, mechanical items, medication, and any other good and man-made thing.

Those that state
"he is ill" : 'Not so much when it came to caring for his own needs: exercising, buying food, flirting, even DECLINING PROFESSIONAL HELP -OFFERED AT NO FEE-A RARE thing these days. He is not "ill" as much as he manipulates and deserves an Oscar. P. S. Pedophiles who rape & kill, the Son of Sam, Hillside Strangler, Charles Manson...all were "ill", too. 'Doesn't excuse this form of "expressing" his or their illness. MANY of us are ill, on many, many levels. Those who DESTROY to prove it should receive their due.

And one more....and all those that hurt others would be allowed to run free.

The reality is that if JH is sentenced to death, it's highly unlikely to happen. Colorado has only executed one person since the death penalty was re-instated. Statistically, Colorado's appeal process takes much longer than in other states and BTW cost substantially more than other states. Even if JH is "sane" now, after decades in prison, and execution is finally scheduled, he may be incompetent to face execution. I feel if the jury comes back with the death penalty it's likely to be symbolic rather than real. If you don't believe in the death penalty, work at changing the law (which could also stay JH's execution). Having said all that - apply current law as appropriate now - including the death penalty (and its up to the jury) not us.

@Me...I am truly sorry for your loss...I certainly would want the DP...and feel that it is most appropriate in this case. You are certainly entitled to your opinions and choices...

@Lynn...although I respect your view...JH is ill, but not insane...thus Guilty on All Counts...DP is almost too good for him...but well deserved...IMHO...

@Heather, I actually agree that God should not be a factor in this. We do, nominally, have separation of church and state. We do need to look at the mindset of members of the jury, and this ideal may affect one or more of them.

@fascinated -- every doctor, even those who testified for the prosecution, agree that he's mentally ill.

Death or Life will not change what happened. Things happen. JH is a mass murderer who was deemed rational at the time of the crime. Many serial killers are rational at the time of their crimes and commit far more torturous, brutal, violent acts to appease their impulse.. yet many of them live until ripe old age and die of natural causes. The system is not 'fair' one way, or another.. it cannot and will not please everyone, it is often as irrational as human thought. No matter what happens, JH is going to be miserable because he will be sitting in prison with unsuitable mental health treatment until which time he dies. Life in prison is a death sentence, all the same.

@ Robin, no sympathy for JH, and I can only imagine (though I hope never to) how I would feel if my child was one of his victims, however, I can also only imagine and hope I never have too - if my child was the defendent. I have no sympathy for JH, just not sure how I feel about the DP. no need to slam me, just my personal opinion.

I see and hear a lot of feelings both pro and con on this blog and I'd like to add my 2 cents for what it is worth. I have been touched by mental health issues in my life. I lost an uncle to schizophrenia. He had been in and out of mental hospitals throughout his life. The last time his illness exacerbated, he turned his vehicle in front of another car and died rather than be institutionalized once again. Some of my concern with this particular person (JH) is the fact that his illness seems to manifest itself at pretty convenient times. With my uncle, I know that there was no convenient time. There is no way, even medicated, that he could have been able to sit through a trial of this length without any outburst of some type. My concern is that , in some ways, this trial can become more of a liability for those who are fighting for the mentally ill. It may leave those who are legitimately fighting for NGBRI to have an even harder time. Diagnosing and treating mental illness is not like finding cancer, diabetes or heart disease. There are very few concrete things to hold on to and when someone seems to be researching and trying to use a mental illness to justify N ct this heinous, it makes others suspect just by association
