Witness Munirih Gravelly: "I stayed on the ground and tried to slide around on my stomach but the gunfire started again so I stopped and just laid there."
Witness Munirih Gravelly said in the Air Force she had to fire an M-16 a couple times, recognized the smell of gunpowder.

Witness Munirih Gravelly: "Someone yelled to get down... I remember there was gunfire right after the canister exploded, but the movie was still playing."

Caleb Medley is very difficult to understand when he speaks. The prosecution has dismissed him. The defense declined to cross examine.

Katie Medley: "Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway were on screen... we were just watching the movie and I noticed the exit to our right opened up, a little bit of light came through... I saw someone step in and throw a canister into the air."
Prosecutor asked Katie Medley if she noticed anything unusual before the shooting: "For us, it was that there were a lot of children in the theater."
Katie Medley said she chose a seat close to the exit because she was 9-months pregnant and was concerned about going into labor.
Katie Medley: "We got there about 10 o'clock because we thought there would be a big line... there was hardly anyone there... we went to the arcade... played games to pass the time."
Katie Medley: "We decided we weren't going to go to the movie that night, but I watched him watch that commercial and his eyes were glued to the TV and I could tell he wanted to go."
First witness called by the prosecution is Caleb Medley's wife, Katie. She was 9-months pregnant when the shooting occurred.

During opening statements Monday, District Attorney George Brauchler stated: "[Holmes] tried to murder a theater full of people because he thought it would make him feel better." Public Defender Dan King argued that is proof of Holmes' insanity.

The defense does not dispute that James Holmes carried out the mass shooting on July 20, 2012. Jurors must decide whether Holmes had a "diseased or defective mind" at the time of the act that made him incapable of knowing right and wrong.
